Collective Kitchen «El Chef»

We cook collectively,, we serve Solidarity

Who we are: We took action back in 2008, using comradeship, solidarity, and self-organisation, as our practices in the daily struggle. Against the capitalist values of profit, commercialization of basic goods and individualism, we started cooking every Saturday at the «Immigrant Center», at 13 Tsamadou Street in Exarchia, where we co-exist with other collectives and organisations. In a society plagued by extreme neoliberal policies, a decade-long economic crisis, the pandemic and the energy crisis, in the first covid wave, we started cooking daily -except Thursdays- hundreds of meals, in order to meet the ever-increasing needs of the people.

The Collective Kitchen «El Chef» is not a charitable acivity, and those of us that participate in the collective, do not think that we are participating in a charity action. We actively intervene politically in Exarchia -our neighbourhood- and in other neighbourhoods of Athens, where necessary. We do not treat our afflicted fellow citizens as hungry or destitute, merely offering them "a plate of food". This logic reproduces the problem. We want to act alltogether, to cultivate solidarity, resistance and co-shape other forms of social reality that will liberate and empower us. The world of injustice is not a natural law, it has been imposed by the capitalist rulling class and we want it to change. And we are fighting for that change.

For these reasons, as a Collective kitchen, we have participated in the past as a sign of solidarity, in the great workers’ strikes of the Greek Steel Industry (ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΧΑΛΥΒΟΥΡΓΙΑ), ALTER TV Channel, Lukisa Aluminum Industry (ΛΟΥΚΙΣΑ), Eleftherotypia Newspaper (ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ), with on-site cooking, food and basic necessities collection. In recent years we have also participated in the Athens ANTI-RACIST FESTIVAL where, together with other collectives, we create a three-day celebration of self-organization, solidarity, resistance, anti-racism and anti-fascism.

Hunger and poverty are used by the system as a weapon to terrorize the working class. We fight against all economic and social oppression, we defend and claim everyone's access to common goods. The strikes, the squats, the demonstrations, the neighborhoods will continue to be the living spaces, where we will meet, cook and discuss... prioritizing the collective over the private, against any separation or discrimination.

The upcoming winter will be even more difficult for the working/lower class. The number of our fellow citizens who need support is constantly increasing. We are determined to continue our effort. In order to do this, resources are required, which until now have come from the free contribution of our comrades and the people who know and support us.

We ask for your support and solidarity, so that we continue to offer food to people-in-need with the same consistency and quality as we have done until now.
